Year 5 have been studying volcanoes. We wrote an explanation about how they erupt and made erupting model volcanoes.

How Do Volcanoes Erupt?

By Matt H

A volcano is a very big mountain that can erupt anytime. When a volcano erupts ash, magma and gas come out.

The molten rock and gases come out with an explosion because of the heat and pressure which builds underground. Active volcanoes can erupt many times. Volcanoes usually occur where there is a weakness in the earth’s surface.

When there is a town near a volcano, the volcano can destroy the town.

How Volcanoes Erupt?

By Stephanie

A volcano is a long pipe extending into the ground. When volcanoes erupt magma is pushed up the tube then turned into lava which is hot molten rock. Then turned into ash. Volcanoes erupt near the mantle made of hot solid rock.

Volcanoes erupt by ground force which can cause earthquakes. When a volcano erupts - firstly it pushes the magma up the tube. Secondly the magma is turned into lava which is hot molten rock. Next it is all pushed up and then it explodes. When it explodes ash is thrown everywhere. Magma comes to the surface to become lava. A volcano is built up with layers of ash, lava and molten rock. A volcano is the earth’s pressure valve releasing underground pressure. Underneath a volcano is the metamorphic rock and underneath that is the igneous rock. A volcano can have many vents and they release the pressure from underground. When a volcano erupts it can destroy everything. Krakatoa was a volcano in Indonesia which erupted in 1883 and was so loud that it was heard in Australia. After it exploded Krakatoa vanished under the sea.

Still today there are many volcanoes active and erupting. Many years ago in Australia there were volcanoes that were active but today they are all extinct such as Saddleback Mountain near Kiama.

HOW DO VOLCANOES ERUPT ?

by Ben

Volcanoes form from faults and folds in the earth’s plates which hit together and form a mountain. A volcano erupts when magma pushes up and turns to lava, and goes through the pipe, and a volcanic eruption is on the way.

Volcanoes erupt from the magma pushing up and exploding. All the lava [magma], ash, gas and rock is expelled and the reaction can be devastating.

After the eruption it smells of ash and sometimes blocks the sunlight.

Some of the signs of a volcanic eruption are smelly gas and tremors and lots of strange sounds.

A volcanic eruption is a shocking experience and is very dangerous.
