Margarine is a type of spread. It is produced in a factory using oil seeds. You can purchase it at different local shops and super markets.

Sunflowers are grown in many places including Australia, Europe, and Central America. In Australia, sunflowers are grown both in summer and winter. Generally, the crop is grown in Queensland, Northern NSW and Northern Victoria. Sunflowers grow over two metres. Their seeds contain vegetable oil which is used in margarine. Sunflowers make a light oil which can be used in salad dressings and in the manufacture of margarine.

Oil seeds are planted on farms. They grow and grow over time until the crop is taken to the crushing mill.

At the crushing Mill they take away the oil.

The oil is placed in a tanker which goes to the margarine factory,

The oil is refined,

The oil is mixed with water, milk, powder, vitamins and colours,

The mixture is heated and cooled.

The margarine is packed into tubs and into cartons. It is taken to supermarkets.

According to the Class Survey, Butter is the most popular spread. However, Daffodil is the most popular margarine. The information for this topic came from “The Natural Story Of Margarine” published by the Australian Oils Seeds Federation in 1999.
