Caroline Chisholm

(1808 - 1877)

Caroline Chisholm

Caroline Chisholm was born in England in 1808. She got Married to Archibald Chisholm when she was 22. She helped many women find a job.

 In 1832 Caroline and her family moved to India later in 1839 they moved to Australia.

When she arrived she started to take some women into her house until Governor Gipps allowed her to use the disused barracks as a home for these women. She travelled throughout the settled areas of N.S.W. to enable prospective employers to offer the women work. She also was active in improving the conditions for women on the ships to Australia.

 In 1846 Caroline and her family return to England and set up an information agency to enable people to find out about conditions and life in Australia before deciding to emigrate.

 Following her return to Australia in 1854 she toured the gold fields and suggested various welfare projects some of which were, then implemented with government assistance. She also set up a ‘girls’ school in Sydney then returned to England.

 In March 1877 Caroline Chisholm died in England. She became poor and forgotten. Caroline was one of the most outstanding women, her face appeared on the $5 note for more than 20 years.

Caroline Chisholm was born in England in 1808.When she was 22 she was married to Archibald Chisholm.She helped young women find jobs.

 

In January 1839 Caroline Chisholm moved to Australia. She helped young women by talking and bringing them into her home.

 

Later, she persuaded Governor Gipps to use a disused barracks to house these women.

 

Caroline improved the conditions on the ships which were bringing them to Australia. She toured the gold fields suggesting various welfare projects some of which were then implemented with government assistance.

 

Caroline returned to England in 1866 were she died in 1877. She is remembered for helping young women and getting on the five dollar bill.

William Charles Wentworth
William Charles Wentworth

William Charles Wentworth was born in N.S.W in 1793. He was educated in England because there were no schools in N.S.W. When Wentworth grew up he became a pioneer landowner, explorer and a politician. In 1810 he was granted land on the Nepean river.

 

Wentworth returned to N.S.W and received more grants of land in 1816. In 1835 he founded the Austrailian patriotic society. In 1842 a legislative council with some elected members was formed. 1843 Wentworth became a member and he argued strongly for the interests of land owners. In 1852 a new constitution became law.

 

Furthermore, Wentworth founded the university of Sydney. In the late 1850’s Wentworth returned to England.

 

Wentworth was a lawyer in England. He was described beyond doubt the ablest man in the Community. He was famous for crossing over the Blue Mountains and also for starting “the Austrailian” newspaper. He died in 1872.

 William Charles Wentworth

 William Charles Wentworth was born in 1793 in New South Wales. He was a pioneer landowner and explored the Blue Mountains. He was educated in England and granted land on the Nepean River.

In 1813 he participated in the first white crossing of the Blue Mountains and was also granted further land. In 1816 he went to England to study law. In 1822 he was called to the bar and returned to the colony in 1824. Wentworth’s next major venture was to establish the newspaper “The Australian” in the 1830’s.This was the first independent paper in the colony.

 In 1835 Wentworth founded the Australian Patriotic Society. In 1842 the Legislative Council with some elected members was formed. In 1843 Wentworth became a member, he argued strongly for the interest of the landowners. In 1855 a new Constitution became law. In 1852 he founded the University of Sydney. In the 1850’s he returned to England.

 William Charles Wentworth accomplished a lot of things. He explored the Blue Mountains, became a lawyer and many more. They described Wentworth as being, beyond a doubt, the ablest man in the community. He died in 1872.
