A bus from Kiama Coaches came to school to pick us up to go to the Maritime Museum and the Art Gallery in Sydney. (Adam) Grade 6 went to Sydney for an excursion to the Maritime Museum and Art Gallery. We were all at school by eighty twenty five and ready to go. The bus left at eight thirty. We were off and having fun and relaxing on the comfortable bus seats. We went past the huge amazing airport and we saw the tall Centrepoint Tower. (Giuseppe) Going into Sydney was good - there were heaps of people running and a lot of gigantic buildings which looked like they would collapse. (Ben) On the 16th May 2001, year six traveled up to Sydney to the Maritime Museum and Art Gallery. The bus trip to Sydney was so exciting. The scenery on the way was great. Looking at Sydney's CBD was great too. Finally we arrived at the Maritime Museum. After eating our recess, we went around to where all the boats were. The exotic boats tempted me to ride on one. (Sean) When we arrived at the Museum a lady with blond hair and a cheery face talked to us about the museum and about the rules. We had to wait for about 10 minutes before we could go in, so we went for a walk along Darling Harbour and saw many interesting boats. (Stephanie) |

The
Maritime Museum - Prospector's Play The
Australian Experience & Gold
Display After recess we went inside to see a play about gold miners. In the play there were two actors; one a black American and the other an Englishman who became partners and dug for gold in the play. Frank, the Englishman, joined the Eureka Stockade while Stan tried to persuade him not to go. In the end they both went their separate ways. We toured the gold rush display and saw lots of different things like guns, quartz, gold, painting and the instruments used to find gold. (Adam) After the play we had a tour of the goldrush display. Our groups' tour guide was Sarah. We saw a real cradle, a license and cool jewelry. (Andrea) |

The Destroyer was called HMAS Vampire. It was a gigantic sea vessel - I went around and in. It was cool - my fave part was the cannons. I was imagining blasting ships in war or shooting practice. (Ben) We went on two naval vessels - the Onslow which was a submarine and the HMAS Vampire, the destroyer. Inside the Onslow, it was very small and the corridors were thin. Through the two periscopes, I could see the Sydney Tower and a street. (Adam) But what was even cooler was the long grey submarine. We actually got to go inside it. Our tour guide was a tall, old man. The first thing we saw were the torpedoes. They were so cool. Then we went through a small hole like a door only smaller and circular. Inside there were lots of beds. They were really small. Then we went through another small hole. This room was sort of like a control room. Then we went to the kitchen. It smelt awful. On through another hole - in this little room there was a bathroom. No-one over a metre could fit in the shower, that's how small it is! On to another room which was boiling hot. There must have been a thousand buttons and flick switches in there. When we finally got out of the submarine and onto HMAS Vampire again, we got to go to the cabin and Katrina had a photo in the captain's chair. Then all of our group had a photo. (Andrea) First we went onto the Onslow, the submarine. We had to wait because only one group at a time was let in. A man with glasses was our guide. He talked to us about the submarine. We moved on and saw the beds, showers, toilets, kitchen and the captain's room. We were allowed to look through the periscopes and you could see Centrepoint Tower. (Stephanie) We went on a tour of the naval vessels. We went on HMAS Vampire, the destroyer first; then into Onslow, the submarine. We walked on top and into the crammed submarine. My favourite part of the submarine was the engine. The only negative was that it was so hot. We walked through the submarine and then out of the hatch. We climbed out of the submarine. It was nice to feel the fresh air again. (Sean) Once we had come out from the museum, we went over to the naval vessels. We went up the blue squeaky wooden path which led up to the huge grey metal HMAS Vampire battle ship. We had to walk across the deck of the Vampire to get to the long grey Onslow (the submarine). Once we were inside we looked around and in the periscope. When we came out of the submarine, we went on a self-guided tour. We saw things like the cabins and the steering wheel. (Nathan) |

We traveled to the Sydney Botanical Gardens for lunch. The nature was so beautiful. We sat under a tree to have lunch. (Sean) We sat under a big tree, out of the sun, to have lunch. When Galija, Karmen, Nikki and I finished our lunch we went down to the fountain - it was beautiful. (Stephanie) |

In the Art Gallery we saw many beautiful, fascinating and spectacular paintings. (Stephanie) The Art Gallery was great too. The sculptures were a lot more interesting than the paintings; especially the ancient Chinese sculptures. (Sean) We walked around the Art Gallery in groups. My favourite painting was an abstract one but I can't explain how it was, but it was a heaps cool one. My favourite sculpture was a man on a horse. My favourite model was the blown-up stuff. I felt sick when I was walking around so I sat down for a minute wherever there was a seat. (Shannon) The gallery was good, I liked the statues. My fave painting was the one that was all swirvy. There was a lot of abstract art in the gallery and it's my favourite type of art. (Ben) There was a blue picture that looked different from every angle. (Giuseppe) Some of the art was really plain, but most of it was excellent except we weren't allowed to touch anything! (Andrea) |

The bus trip home was boring. Nikki and I tried to entertain ourselves by playing UNO. (Stephanie) We got back to school at 10 to 5. (Nathan) |

My thoughts and feelings of the excursion are a wonderful experience. Thanks to all the five teachers for taking us. If it wasn't for them, I probably would never have a chance to go. I really enjoyed the excursion and I hope I go again with my family. (Stephanie) I thought it was good. I had a really fun day. (Nathan) I really enjoyed that excursion because I saw some things that I had never seen before. It was a long day and my legs got sore. (Giuseppe) I was worn out by the end. I thought a lot after the excursion. (Ben) This excursion wasn't the best but it sure was fun and interesting. I even learnt a thing or two. I hope to come back again some day. (Sean) |
